Do Some Ministry or Business Departments Deserve An “Unfair” Advantage in Our Summer Planning

In our last edition of Leadership Helps, we learned that for most pastors, ministry leaders, and business leaders, summer means having more flexible schedules. It is an excellent time to prepare for the upcoming fall ministry or business season when many churches and organizations experience a surge in attendance and activity.

The summer months provide an excellent opportunity for leaders to work not just in the ministry or their business but also on their ministry or business. We learned from Chris Surratt with Lifeway Research ten areas every leader should do in the summer to prepare for the fall:

  1. Reflect on The Past Season
  2. Plan for The Upcoming Year
  3. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals
  4. Recruit and Train Volunteers or New Hires
  5. Develop a Communication Plan
  6. Take Time for Personal Development
  7. Evaluate Your Technology and Online Presence
  8. Connect with Community Partners
  9. Pray for Your Church, Ministry, Customers, and Community
  10. Rest and Recharge

Your bedrock ministry or business departments are another critical area to evaluate during the summer as you prepare for the fall.

While we covered a lot of ground in what tips to use during the summer to prepare for the fall, one crucial but sensitive area is determining the bedrock ministries or business departments (no more than five) that deserve an unfair advantage in your church, ministry, or business.

Because here’s the thing…

Those ministries or departments don’t have to be the only thing you do, but your team does need to define which are vital in helping you reach your most important goals.

Those bedrock ministries should receive…

  • More time
  • More attention
  • More funding
  • More staff or volunteers
  • More communication
  • (you get the idea)

So, if you only have five minutes to spare today…jot down the handful of key ministry or business departments that have an oversized influence on the success of achieving your mission and vision.

It’s a short exercise that will bring new clarity to your plan for this summer and beyond.
