Five Principles for Making Right Decisions

Because for every matter there is a time and judgment, though the misery of man increases greatly.  For he does not know what will happen; so who can tell him when it will occur?”

Ecclesiastes 8:6-7

For the rest of your life, you’ll try to determine the best timing for many decisions you must make in your life and ministry. You may be deciding on a ministry, career, or relationship change.

The Bible tells us, Because for every matter there is a time and judgment, though the misery of man increases greatly.  For he does not know what will happen; so who can tell him when it will occur?” (Ecclesiastes 8:6-7).

Because timing is an integral part of any decision, keep these five steps in mind as you decide:

Step #1: Don’t hurry to make the correct decision.

If [since] we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” 5:25 NJKV).

Hurry is the enemy of good decisions!  Let God set the timing for your choices.  The best decisions will always be in His time so that you can surrender your decisions and timing to Him.

Step #2: Remain quiet to hear What the Lord Says in His Word.

“I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies.” (Psalm 119:59 NKJV).

If your life is filled with “noise,” you won’t be able to hear the whisper of God’s voice in His Word.  That’s why it’s so vital you invest time alone with the Lord. God’s will is found in God’s Word.  And to know God’s will, you must know God’s Word!

Step #3: Recruit others to pray with you.

Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me” (Romans 15:30 NKJV).

When you ask others to pray about a decision you need to make, they can encourage and assist you while asking God to give you focus and clarity.

Step #4: Consider what you do well.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:10 NKJV).

God gave you spiritual gifts and special abilities so you could use them to add value to others.  Make sure your decision lets you devote more time to sharing them with others.

Step #5: Request advice from wise friends.

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14 NKJV).

You want more than your own perspective when determining the right time for a decision.  Get help from other pastors, godly family, friends, or your mentor.  Look for the wisest people you know and listen to their advice.

Timing must be included in making the right decisions.  Since the Lord knows all about timing and He has a purpose for you, always remember He is never too late nor too early!

You can trust Him to be right on time—in His time!
